It should be in the rifle located where the receiver and the barrel meet.

My great grandpa who served in WWII would call me Un-American for not knowing the internal mechanics of an M1 rifle. I am working on a revamped model with the missing components

I got to fire my Grandpa's Thompson and a German MP40. I think the Thompson had a bit more power to it.

They're both pretty heavy calibers...have you seen Red Jacket Firearms' supercharged Thompson (from Sons of Guns)?! That thing shoots crazy fast!

Nice weapons, although the M1's wood extends most of the barrel, with the gas return tube underneath, as ND-2500 said.
