                                   Rise of the Guardians

                                   Book IV:  Heroes Reborn

Chapter XIII: Shadows of the Vale

Mass fighting broke out all over the planet. After two years passing on Avalaria, the resistance force had acquired new leadership. None of the young dragons families knew of their children's return but were about to find out soon. Lord Marshall Krydeir decided to use a new tactic with killing the Avalarian leaders. She wanted to fit neural transmitters on selected prisoners to control and use them as assassins. Drekhol had sent Spyro and Brigarr, along with Xyira (Z-I ear-Ah) and Mudarr (M-oo-D-arr) to scout the outer defenses of the Forgotten Vale. The city would be heavily defended and it would be difficult to recapture.
In the camp, Aldmir was walking with Akyre listening to the ventures she had with Spyro.
"Amazing, in just a few short months you managed to encounter new alien races, capture and enemy star ship and discover all ten of your spiritual powers. No dragon has ever done this in millennia." Aldmir spoke.
Akyre implied, "No dragon has ever been off planet before. What scares me the most is..."
Just then a familiar voice of a female dragon came, "*gasp* Akyre?!"
Akyre looked to see her mother and father.
She hurried over to them in happiness as she replied, "MOM! DAD!"
She greeted her parents with a heartfelt hug. Azule held her duaghter in her arms as Terragon lowered his head behind Akyre.
"We were so worried about you." Azule spoke in joy that Akyre was still alive.
"I'm fine, I had the help from a special friend." Akyre replied as she stepped back, "By the way where is Spyro. We were supposed to meet after the sun set."
"Aldmir sent him, and three others to the Forgotten Vale on a scouting journey. They are out to find the strengths and weaknesses of the Ubmyran defense grid around the city." Terragon answered.
"We don't know how long it will take, but they should be back before tomorrow. Tell us what happened while you were abducted." Azule added.
Meanwhile 6 hours later on a ridge overlooking Vale City, Spyro and Brigarr along with Xyira and Mudarr were observing the activity in and around the city. The skies were calm and clear with the two moons shining over the lands, the air was mild with a cool breeze blowing through the forests. The city was lit up like a metallic Christmas tree with Ubmyran patrol fighters and ships swarming the area. It seems that Krydeir had stepped up security around the cities and largely populated towns. The four dragons were low to the ground and in the darkest of shadows. Spyro was the only one wearing Maldorian advanced battle armor while his accomplices were wearing Avalarian armor.
"That place is lit up like a fortress. How are we going to get inside without being spotted?" Mudarr exclaimed.
"We're not. This is simply an observation mission." Spyro replied, "But we need to get closer to the city edge to observe the walls."
"If they have a pattern of security we could find a way to breach it." Brigarr spoke.
"Maybe you took a little too many blows to the head in your 'Andromeda Adventure' but some of us like to leave here alive." Xyira replied.
Brigarr stated, "I've seen the way Ubmyrans work. When Spyro and Akyre were unconscious they take routine shifts and change them after 3 hours."
"That was on a star ship. Shifts, from what I've heard, are typically longer on planets than space." Spyro replied, "Lets move...quietly."
They moved positions closer to the city's fortified wall. On the ground they saw transport vehicles, armed guards, and several prisoners being loaded into the vehicles. The Ubmyrans packed them into the transports like cattle to the slaugher. It was sickening to the dragons to see their people treated like vermin.
"Toh grah. Dulrakitet vigkrit ungah. Z'telth unria valshugn." The Ubmyran Xeroc officer said in their alien language.
"What did he say." Xyira asked.
"Something about taking those people to a prison." Spyro replied as he continued to observe the enemy's movement.
As the officer left, the two J'Tahl followed him inside the walls while two fresh guards took their places on guard duty. The transports hovered to the main highway and sped off with their cargo in hold sending the innocent people to their deaths. Spyro looked to one Ubmyran soldier and tried to get a look at his face. He zeroed his vision ans recognized him.
     "How the hell?" he said.
     "What?" Brigarr asked.
Spyro replied, "How did Zular get here so fast?"
"Zular? Wasn't he the guy who trained you in the AFL?" Brigarr asked.
"Indeed he was. It seems hes with the Ubmyrnas." Spyro implied.
Zular was down below giving orders to the soldiers at the gates. Originally he was responsible for delivering Spyro to the Ubmyrans for him to be killed by the Invasion Field Marshall. However his mission failed when the star ship Krogarrius intervened. Four more standard guards and two machine gunners moved to potions guarding the gates. Spyro kept his sights on the Ubmyran he thought was his friend as the alien walked into the perimeter gate.
"I have an idea, why don't we soften up some of their exterior defenses before we invade the city." Spyro handed out.
"I'd say that's a stupid idea. We could get killed." Xyira stated.
Mudarr implied, "It would lighten the opposition on our forces when they invade.."
"We need to act fast, I think there is a convoy heading this way." Brigarr said while scanning the road behind them.
The four dragons moved to a darkened area of the highway as the Ubmyran convoy hummed up the road. After the three assault vehicles and APCs passed, several cargo transports sped by. Spyro looked in one of them and saw no soldiers, just equipment and ran for the next passing one. After jumping inside the rear vehicle, Brigarr, Xyira and Mudarr followed. They jumped inside with Spyro and hunkered down to avoid detection. The vehicles slowed to be checked as the dragons waited for their moment to exit. Their hearts raced, nerves shaken and their spirits ready to fight. Their vehicle was next to be checked and was cleared for entry. The engine powered up and drove through the containment field.
"Looks like we're in." Brigarr whispered.
"Watch your surroundings." Spyro ordered, "We need to keep a low profile and find whatever information we can."
"What's the game plan?" Xyira asked.
"You and Mudarr find a building the Ubmyrans are using as an alert relay or transmition building. Brigarr and I will seek out a computer terminal and try to download as much intel as possible." Spyro instructed, "Be careful and may the Ancestors guide you."
The truck pulled to a loading/unloading dock and powered down. The driver stepped out of the vehicle with his armor clanging against the metal. He picked up his pulse rifle and walked to the back of the truck to check on his cargo. He lowered the loading gate and was pulled into the truck. Sounds of a struggle, blood gushing and choking were heard. Brigarr stepped out followed by Xyira, Mudarr and then Spyro, whose claws were covered in blueish purple blood.
Mudarr looked back and said, "Damn Spy, brutal much?"
"These aliens deserve no mercy. I've seen what they've done to innocent people." Spyro replied as he wiped the blood on a patch of grass, "Let's get to work."
Xyira implied, "Either way that was kinda barbaric, even for a dragon."
The four dragons split up into teams of two to undermine the Ubmyran's security. Mudarr and Xyira went to the command building tasked with regulating the alarm systems throughout the city. They came to a street leading directly to the city center and checked for any patrols. They saw what looked to be six small 14ft hexagonal containers and several aliens opening each one.
"I wonder whats in those containers." Mudarr stated.
"You can check all you want. I'm steering clear of them." Xyira replied not wanting to give themselves away.
Just then one of the crates birthed an Ubmyran mech-suit, a two legged machine with arm mounted plasma accelerator cannons and a thermal grenade launcher. It was large enough to take down an adult dragon and well equipped to sustain itself in a fight with one.
"Um...I don't like the looks of that thing." Xyira stated.
"Lets get to our objective." Mudarr replied.
They hastened back to the shadows to avoid being detected while on their way to the security grid building. As they moved into the alley ways, a patrol of Ubmyran sentry vehicles and soldiers marched by down the main road. Meanwhile Spyro and Brigarr had entered what looked to be a computer library converted to Ubmyran systems. They looked around for any soldiers while maintaining a combat ready stance. The room itself was mostly dark with only the server lights running and the air was cold. The sounds of humming and beeping echoed in the room from the many data processors hooked up to the server towers.
"Move quietly when finding a terminal." Spyro instructed.
"No, I was thinking of alerting the enemy." Brigarr spoke with humor and sarcasm.
Spyro stated, "This is no time to be funny. Lives depend on us getting this information on the Ubmyrans."
"I was trying to ease the tension with a joke. Why are you so damn serious all of a sudden?" Brigarr spoke
"I know but its just the fact that yesterday Akyre and I didn't know that over 9 billion people would depend on us saving their lives. Its a heavy burden to carry on your shoulders, you wouldn't understand." Spyro replied.
"At this point I think I would." Brigarr stated, "Lot of devotion in protecting a species."
They split off to search for something that looked to be a computer terminal. Spyro had taken the device needed to collect the data and hung it in his teeth. He looked to his left and saw what looked to be a console similar to the one on the Hal'Govak. He quickly walked up to it and placed the data collector on the flat board of the console. He keyed in the proper sequence as Brigarr approached him.
"Can you read this?" he asked as he watched his brother work with the alien technology.
"Partially. Most of what I learned was on the Hal'Govak. Akyre and I had to interpret it in the middle of a fight with the Maldorians." Spyro replied.
"I found a comms station, the device I had was set to auto collect. It'll take about 5 minutes." Brigarr informed.
"And that should.....done." Spyro muttered to himself. "I've got most of the tactical data and troop deployment rosters for the entire planet for the Maldorians. Also a few locations of Avalarian interest."
Just then the sound of a door opening was heard at the far end of the room. Spyro and Brigarr qucikly looked to the source of the sound to hear a pair of Ubmyrans talking. Spyro made a hand gesture for them to hide in an alcove. Before leaving he shut down his collection device and took it. Brigarr went for an empty alcove as Spyro looked for one to hide in. He could not find one and looked for a well darkened area of the room.
"Ninyra. Vyouun do kavira cha'za." one Xeroc Ubmyran said as he closed the door.
Spyro waited in a dark corner of the room with the device in clutched in his teeth. The Ubmyran walked passed without seeing Spyro into the server maze. Spyro looked to Brigarr and did not see him with his device. He pointed to the data collector and Brigarr looked for his. After realizing that it was still on the console desk collecting the information he looked to the comms station. He found the Ubmyran standing there analyzing what looked to be Avalarian communications. Luckilly the alien did not bother with the data collector. He thought someone left it there and would be back to claim it. The dragons waited for the alien to leave as they sat tight for a while.
Later at the security building, Mudarr and Xyira had pulled the plug on the security grid. Both of them were partially covered in Ubmyran blood from having to remove a few soldiers.
"Geez how many more of these aliens are we going to have to cut through?" Mudarr spoke as he tried to wipe the blood on a nearby cloth.
"I don't know but keep quiet. I think I hear someone ahead." Xyira spoke as she halted for a moment.
They moved to a room with one Ubmyran Xeroc talking into a microphone. Around him were several monitors with camera images, computer panels, and a small server tower used to store all of the video data.
"Let's wait for him to leave" Xyira whispered.
The Ubmyran operative yawned as a sign of exhaustion and that he was about to leave his post. Xyira and Mudarr hurried away from the door as the alien shut off all of the computers in the room and walked to the exit. The two dragons hid from the alien as he shut and locked the door. He walked down the hall way further from the dragons content that the room was secure. Xyira moved quietly from her hiding place followed by Mudarr, making their way back to the room they needed to break into.
As Xyira began to pick the lock with a metal fragment and a piece of arterium wire, she stated, "Leave it to a bunch of aliens to ruin my home town."
"You lived in the Vale?" Mudarr asked.
"Not in the general city, no. I lived out in Green Water Cove 8 miles from the Vale. The city is where I spent most of my time with my friends." Xyira said as she turned the shard to the right 30 degrees.
A click was heard indicating that the lock had been picked. She opened the door and they walked in. They looked around to see where to begin from.
     "Now what." Mudarr spoke.
Xyira ordered, "Lets start by destroying that system tower."
They began to disassemble the server tower and destroy it piece by piece. Meanwhile back at the main data bank, Spyro and Brigarr were  still waiting for the Ubmyran to leave. Fortunately he was getting ready to shut down the system for the night. He turned off the main screen and walked to the door. Spyro kept his guard up while hoping that the alien would not spot him. The alien stopped for a moment, almost as if he knew there was someone else in the room. He moved his hand to feel for the light switch and felt a scaly membrane on the wall. It was Spyro's wing he was touching and to a dragon it was an insult for an enemy to touch his wings. The alien grew more and more suspicious. As he pulled his hand away he thought it was a new tapestry in the room but there were no tapestries allowed in the server room. The instant he went for his plasma pistol Spyro thrust his tail blade into the Xeroc's abdomen. The sound of meat and bone crunching was heard as the blade broke through the aliens back.
Spyro emerged from the shadows and growled, "Don't ever touch my wings again."
The Ubmyran's eyes widened as purplish blue blood poured from his mouth. Spyro pulled his tail spade from the alien, dropping the corpse to the ground. Brigarr went over to pull the body into a hiding place.
"Forget about him. Our forces are going to storm into the city in a few hours. The aliens would be preoccupied." Spyro halted.
Brigarr nodded and went to retrieve his device. After gathering his equipment, Spyro and Brigarr left the server room the same way they cam in. They exited a vent on top of the building and waited for Xyira and Mudarr. After an hour of waiting their two friends arrived with a piece of technology that could aid them in their fight against the Ubmyran Empire. It was only hours before the joint Avalarian/Maldorian military could retake their first city from the Ubmyrans...
The battle has begun but the Avalarians must observe the Ubmyrans before initiating the first strike. So far they think that there is a prisoner loose and is killing Ubmyran patrols.

Great chapter, my friend.  I also really loved he part where Akyre reunited with her parents.
