I know this is late notice on the Into Darkness Star Trek movie but me and my dad were contemplating some ideas on what they should do now that the Enterprise is on its 5 year mission.

My idea was to introduce the Refit model either after the five year mission is done or have it come in through a temporal displacement path.

The temporal idea is that the old Enterprise is running a patrol near the Federation/Klingon Neutral Zone when they detect an anomaly. They divert their heading to intercept the anomaly and find another federation ship adrift. A closer look shows it the USS Enterprise...just in a new look. All of the crew onboard the new ship are dead except for one, Commander Decker; Lead supervising officer of the Constitution Class Refit fleet. In while Kirk, Spock and Dr McCoy are on board the ship, another interstellar distortion occurs and rattles both Enterprises. McCoy injects himself with a serum used to treat Cmdr Decker and takes in too much. It causes him to go crazy while a new ship emerges from the distortion. It's the doomsday machine built solely for the destruction of the Federation. The destructive weapon starts to hammer the crap out of the old Enterprise causing extensive and irreparable damages to the ship. While Bones is prepping the new Enterprise to go into the Distortion, Sulu orders all crew to abandon the old Enterprise and transfer via wideband transporter, developed by Commander Scott, to the new ship. With the doomsday machine barreling to Earth and the Enterprise Refit spooling back in time to the mid 21st Century; the crew is faced with two issues. 1; Avoid getting killed on Earth during World War 3 and keep Dr McCoy from killing Zefrum Cochran. 2; Return to the 23rd Century and destroy the Doomsday Machine.

I think City on the Edge of Forever would be really cool! That original series episode was awesome, who knows what they could make out of it if they decide to do something like that.
